Glass fabrics

100 meters wingspan offshore wind mills.

This achievement is possible thanks to the incorporation of glass fibers in the polymer (epoxy, polyester) constituting the envelope of the blades. This composite material, which combines lightness, stiffness and strength, makes this blades able to resist to the very high constraints due to wind and rotation. Also used for the making of car bodies and boat hulls, the glass fiber can be dispersed in the polymeric matrix in the form of chopped fibers, long wires or glass fabrics. Each wire is made of several thousands of individual filaments with diameter in the micrometer range. It is coated with a sizing which supplies chemical compatibility with the resin. see http://www.saint-gobain-technical-fabrics.com
