Presentation
"Surface du Verre et Interfaces" is a joint CNRS/Saint-Gobain laboratory doing fundamental research along two main axes
- Thin films and nanostructures
- Heterogeneous reactive materials, and applications to glass melting.
As a joint unit, many of our research projects are closely related to Saint-Gobain products or processes. We are located in the buildings of Saint-Gobain Recherche, one of Saint-Gobain's main research centres in the suburb of Paris. Both CNRS and Saint-Gobain staff work in the lab.
The historical core of the activity of the lab concerns oxide surfaces and functionalization by coatings or nanostructures. Recent studies include the growth and optical properties of structured surfaces, photoinduced hydrophilicity of titanium dioxide and the growth of nanostructured semi-conductor surfaces. Our main focus is however the mechanical response of amorphous materials, thin films and multilayers where topics like scratch mechanism of low-adhesion brittle materials, plasticity of glass and mechanical properties of sol-gel coatings are investigated.
In 2007, the laboratory launched a new activity on Heterogeneous reactive materials. The aim is to develop research projects on complex and evolving multi-phase systems relevant to the melting of glass and the processing of materials used in the building industry. Topics linked to complex and granular media or the dynamics of viscous fluids will be covered, as well as the physical chemistry of glasses. We will address the stability of foam and bubble populations in viscous fluids, drainage in unsaturated granular media, mixing of heterogeneous fluids or reactive wetting by silicate liquids. Emphasis is put both on the transformation dynamics of these systems and their physical properties (e.g. thermal properties, rheology or meso-scale chemical homogeneity).
